Newspapers Review: Details of Gaddafi Killing Dominate Dailies

RAMALLAH, October 23, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Sunday focused on details of the killing of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Egypt.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported, on its front page, on an internet video of a Libyan rebel reciting the details of killing Gaddafi on Thursday, the headline quoting the rebel: “I captured Gaddafi and killed him with two shots in the head and armpit.”

More details from the 21-year old rebel’s video clip were featured in the newspaper, admitting that he killed Gaddafi because other Libyan rebels wanted to take him to Musrata city.

The three newspapers reported on Abbas’ visit to Egypt and his meeting with the chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of Egypt, Mohammad Tantawi, during which they discussed the latest political developments and issues of common interest.

Al-Ayyam was the only daily to report on a meeting between Hamas and Fatah within two weeks after the Fatah Revolutionary Council session.

The daily expected Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to propose to form a government before the general elections, contradicting Abbas’ proposal to hold the elections first.

The prime story in al-Quds focused on jailed Fatah lawmaker, Marwan Barghouti’s, denial of any knowledge on the latest prisoners’ exchange deal between Hamas and Israel last week.

The daily also featured Jordanian King Abdullah II’s speech to the World Economic Forum, in which he stressed that the future of the Middle East lies in achieving peace based on the two-state solution, which guarantees a sovereign Palestinian state on 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.
