Newspapers Review: Dailies Report on UNESCO’s Recommendation to Grant Palestine Full Membership

RAMALLAH, October 6, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies Thursday reported on the recommendation of the executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Wednesday to grant Palestine full membership.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida front page stories focused on UNESCO executive board’s recommendation to grant Palestine full membership, which was confronted by the US and Israel’s instigation and rejection and France’s hesitation.

Al-Hayat said that “UNESCO’s recommendation to grant Palestine membership is a diplomatic victory.”

The three dailies printed photos of different demonstrations which took place in the West Bank and Gaza in support of Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

They also reported on President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) today, and his meeting with European Union Foreign Policy Chief, Catherine Ashton, in Strasbourg.

The dailies reported on Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan saying, “Israel exercises state terrorism; Israel threatens the region's security.”

Al-Quds focused on the Obama administration’s efforts to reverse the Congress’ decision to block $200 million of financial aid to the Palestinians.

An al-Quds editorial tackled the Palestinian prisoners’ file in Israeli prisons, which is growing by the day, and called on Palestinians to continue their support by holding several demonstrations in the West Bank and Gaza.
