Newspapers Review: Abbas’ Address to Palestinians Dominate Dailies

RAMALLAH, September 26, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic newspapers Monday focused on President Mahmoud Abbas’ address to the Palestinians upon his arrival in his headquarter in Ramallah on Sunday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Quds and al-Ayyam’s front pages reported on the thousands of Palestinians who came from across the West Bank to Ramallah to receive Abbas upon his arrival from New York, after submitting the Palestinian application for full United Nations membership of a Palestinian state on Friday.

Abbas stressed the Palestinian leadership’s position not to engage in negotiations without a complete halt of settlement activities and to be based on international resolutions as terms of reference.

Headlines in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted in red Abbas’ final words to the Palestinian nation, saying “raise your heads, you are Palestinians.”

Pictures of Abbas and the cheering crowd dominated the three papers’ front pages as well.

Al-Quds’ reported on the front page on the US growing frustration after Abbas’ speech to the UN General Assembly and submitting the Palestinian application despite all attempts to sway him from pursing the UN bid.

The news piece also featured that Us administration is considering replacing its peace envoys and mechanism after failing to foil the Palestinian move.

Al-Ayyam’s front page reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his call to Abbas to resume negotiations without pre-conditions, international resolutions as terms of reference and the halt of settlement activities.

Al-Quds editorial tackled the Palestinian reception of Abbas, saying that Palestinians again conveyed their message to the world, that it’s time for an independent Palestinian state and ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territory.
