Palestinians Urge Germany to Support UN Membership

RAMALLAH, September 26, 2011 (WAFA) – Palestinians Monday urged Germany to support the United Nations state membership bid, saying that Germany will align itself with the enemies of the Palestinian people if it does not.

A group of Palestinian activists from the Palestinian Peoples’ Party (PPP) gathered outside the German Representative Office in Ramallah to give “a verbal message to Germany that its position against Palestine’s membership in the United Nations is offensive,” according to PPP official, Khaled Mansour.

He said that Germany has decided to stand with the US and Israel, enemies of the Palestinian people, because of their opposition to the statehood bid. “We urge Germany to change its position and vote in favor of Palestine’s membership in the UN,” he said.

The protesters carried signs describing German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and US President Barack Obama as “enemies of the Palestinians” and “Israel’s allies.”

Mansour said that unless Germany changes its opposition to the Palestinian UN application and supports it, the Palestinian people should boycott the upcoming German reception planned in Ramallah on October 3 to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall and German unification day.

“As Germany celebrates the fall of the Berlin Wall, it decides to support Israel, which is building a wall much worse than the Berlin Wall,” he said.

“Our people and institutions should boycott Germany’s celebrations so that it will understand that it is harming its interests in the area,” he said.
