RAMALLAH, September 25, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Sunday focused on President Mahmoud Abbas’ journey back to the Palestinian Territory after submitting an application last Friday for full United Nations membership of a Palestinian state.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam’s front pages quoted Abbas as saying: “We expect that a vote on Palestine’s membership request will be done in weeks, not months.” Subtitles in the dailies reported that the Palestinian leadership is working to amend the Paris economic agreement.
Abbas told reporters traveling with him on the plane that flew him from New York to Jordan that he plans to hold intensive talks with Hamas in the next period, not only to discuss reconciliation, but also to hold in-depth discussions about future Palestinian work, featured the newspapers.
The three dailies reported on Palestinian preparations to receive Abbas following his arrival to the West Bank from New York this afternoon. Al-Ayyam printed a picture of Palestinians hanging posters of Abbas in Ramallah.
Al-Quds’ front page reported on the Palestinian Authority’s reaction to the Quartet’s statement issued on Friday. A news piece reported on Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki’s description of the statement as “short” and that it does not include stopping Israeli settlement construction nor withdrawal to behind the 1967 borders.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a picture of the funeral of the Palestinian man who was killed by Israeli soldiers in Qusra, a village south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, on Friday.
Western diplomats stressed that Abbas’ movement to the UN broke US domination on the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, reported al-Ayyam newspaper.
An al-Quds editorial tackled Abbas’ much-awaited arrival as the new hero of the Palestinians.
