RAMALLAH, September 22, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies Thursday focused on the mass rallies which took place on Wednesday in the West Bank to support the Palestinian bid to the United Nations, and US President Barak Obama’s speech at the opening of the 66th annual session of the United Nations.
Al-Quds' front page story reported on Obama’s speech in which he announced his opposition of the Palestinian bid to seek recognition in the UN, saying “there is no shortcut to ending a conflict that has endured for decades. Peace is hard work.”
The daily printed a photo of Abbas and Obama in a meeting after his speech to the UN. Both looked very tense.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam printed photos of the rallies in Ramallah, in which thousands of Palestinians participated to reflect their support of the bid.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s speech, in which he suggested the approval of Palestine as an observer member in the UN and the setting of a bilateral negotiations schedule for one year to achieve peace in the region.
An al-Quds editorial focused on the bid to the UN, saying that “even if the Palestinians get what they have been working on, which is full membership and recognition in the UN council, the journey of negotiations with Israel is still hard and long.”
