Seven Security Council Members Support Palestinian Bid, says Al-Malki

RAMALLAH, September 20, 2011 (WAFA) - Non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council Gabon resolved its decision to vote in favor of the Palestinian request to gain full UN membership of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders this Friday, bringing the number of the states supporting the Palestinian bid in the Security Council to seven, Tuesday announced Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki.

Al-Malki, in an interview with Voice of Palestine, said the Organization of Islamic Cooperation pledged to talk directly to Turkey, Serbia, Nigeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina to convince them to vote in favor of the Palestinian bid, thus guaranteeing nine votes in favor and forcing the US to vote.

President Mahmoud Abbas stressed his final decision to apply for the Security Council, refusing several new plans in line with the immense pressure to retreat from requesting full membership, including a proposal to go to the UN General Assembly instead, added al-Malki.

He reported that foreign ministers of Islamic states will hold an Islamic supporting summit after Abbas’ 20-minute speech to request full membership of the Palestinian state at the General Assembly.

Al-Malki further said that Palestinians, Arabs, and international supporters of the Palestinian bid will organize demonstrations outside the UN headquarters coinciding with Abbas’ speech, and will loudly repeat Abbas’ sentences.
