Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said that the EU had “taken note of President (Mahmoud) Abbas' intention to seek full membership in the UN.”
“We now need to see the details and timing of the request,” she said.
Kocijancic said that “the next days are crucial. It is for Palestinians to decide on next steps but we continue to believe that a constructive solution that can gather as much support as possible and allows for the resumption of negotiations is the best and only way to deliver the peace and two-state solution the Palestinian people want.”
The EU said it will “redouble our efforts together with our partners in the quartet to launch negotiations between the parties as soon as possible, this remains the only way to end the conflict.”
The EU emphasized that it “has always been a strong supporter of Palestinian aspirations for statehood - our substantive development program aims at building the institutions and infrastructure of the future Palestinian state.”
