Newspapers Review: Palestinian Request to UN Ready, said Dailies

RAMALLAH, September 10, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Saturday reported that the Palestinian request to United Nations to gain full membership of the state of Palestine within 1967 borders is ready and will be submitted between September 20 and 21.

Al-Ayyam, Al-Quds and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ interview with international news agencies on Thursday where he announced the readiness of the bid and stressed that he does not seek further confrontations with the US. He also denied Israeli claims of expected Palestinian violence and guaranteed order during the bid.

A picture of Egyptian protesters while breaking into the Israeli embassy in Cairo Friday night after they destroyed part of the cement wall surrounding the embassy building was highlighted in Al-Ayyam’s front page. The daily news article said that protesters threw thousands of official Israeli documents to the streets.

Al-Quds daily published an article by US President Barack Obama in which he commemorated the tenth anniversary of the attack on World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Special envoy of the quartet on the Middle East, Tony Blair, described the Palestinian bid to UN is a “cry of despair” and called to launch a new campaign to resume negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, featured Al-Ayyam newspaper.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida’s front page reported on an Israeli army document that authorized Jewish settlers to shoot Palestinians near settlements in the West Bank. The story featured the settlers’ latest attack on Birzeit University, north of Ramallah, where settlers painted racist and offensive graffiti on the university’s outer walls. The daily also reported on settlers’ writing anti-Arab, anti-Muslim hate graffiti on the wall of a mosque in Birzeit.

Al-Quds editorial tackled the Jewish settlers’ escalated attacks against Palestinian civilians and property, especially the vicious campaign targeting places of worship and mosques. The editorial considered the escalation as an Israeli attempt to draw the area into a twirl of violence and praised Palestinian leadership’s assurances on the Palestinian movement’s non-violence orientation.

The daily held the international community and the Middle East peace quartet responsible for the Israeli escalations and called on them to immediately end the Israeli aggression and occupation.
