Newspapers Review: Gaza Situation Dominates Dailies’ Front Page

RAMALLAH, August 20, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Saturday focused on the ongoing Israeli air attacks against the Gaza Strip started on Thursday and the death of 14 Palestinians as a result.

Al-Ayyam main headline reported from Gaza on the latest killing of seven Palestinians, including a baby, in the Israeli air strikes against civilian targets in the Strip.

Pictures of two children killed in the air strikes dominated more than half of Al-Ayyam's front page, whereas Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and Al-Quds printed pictures of the consequential damage to Palestinian houses in Gaza.

Al-Quds front page story reported that Israeli police prevented by force thousands of Palestinians from reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem to perform Friday prayers.

Tens of thousands of Palestinian Muslims performed the prayer at checkpoints and in the streets leading to Al-Aqsa, said the newspaper.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida featured the Egyptian condemnation and warning of the consequences of the death of several Egyptian soldiers by Israeli forces on Thursday. The newspaper also covered popular protests in front of the Israeli embassy in Cairo, demanding the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to Egypt.

The three dailies covered the latest events in Syria and Libya. Al-Quds newspaper featured intelligence reports that anticipated the departure Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi to Tunisia.

Al-Quds editorial tackled the implications of the Israeli escalation against the Gaza Strip and targeting leaders of Popular Resistance Committees in Gaza, which it said breaches international law and agreements.

The editorial held the international community, particularly the quartet, responsible for the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, demanding immediate intervention to stop the Israeli attacks that undermine the peace process in the region.
