RAMALLAH, June 20, 2011 (WAFA) – Hanan Ashrawi, member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee, Monday urged Europe to stand up for Palestinian efforts to get United Nation recognition and membership of a Palestinian state in September.
She strongly criticized Israeli attempts to recruit world states against this UN vote, saying it reflects Israel’s mentality as occupier opposed to peace.
Ashrawi, who is also a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, stressed while on a speaking tour of several European countries the importance of supporting the PLO plan to seek UN membership of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital. She called on Europe to support the Palestinian right to a state and the right for self-determination.
She urged the international community, particularly European Union (EU) member states, to effectively intervene in the peace process that is dominated by US absolute support of Israel through activating the EU ministerial declarations of 2009 and 2010.
The EU declaration made a clear legal reference to the peace process and took a clear position on the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state.
