TEL AVIV, June 6, 2011 (WAFA) – Israeli military sources said the army is worried the rallies on the borders with Syria will become weekly demonstrations, like those in Nilin and Bilin in the West Bank.
A senior Israeli officer in the north told Yediot Ahranot that there is a difference between the Syrian border areas and Nilin, because international law allows the use of gas bombs to a very limited extent and prohibits their use outside the border.
“If the Intifada on the borders continues, the army will have to change its deployment and training, because there are military units on the borders, but they are not in military training programs,” said the officer.
The Israeli army had stopped its military training and transferred its soldiers to the northern borders for the period of the Nakba and Naksa events. An army officer of the northern area said: “If the demonstrations and infiltration attempts continue, we will have to call upon the reserve units, who will have to leave their jobs.”
