Israeli Police Crackdown on Naksa Day March in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, June 5, 2011 (WAFA) – Israeli police Sunday prevented a group of Palestinians, including Fatah leaders, from marching in East Jerusalem to commemorate Naksa Day, according to officials.

Dimitri Diliani, member of Fatah Revolutionary Council, told WAFA that dozens of Israeli forces attacked the Palestinians as they gathered in Al-Zahra Street, in the commercial area of East Jerusalem.

Some of the protesters, including the Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, and Fatah leaders Hatem Abdul Qadder and Diliani, took refuge in a mosque after a police chase.

The police besieged the mosque in an attempt to arrest the officials, he said.

Naksa, or setback, marks the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip in June 1967.
