Newspapers Review: Dailies Feature Settlers’ Actions in Jerusalem, Abbas’ Meetings in Rome

RAMALLAH, June 2, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian dailies focused Thursday on Israeli settlers’ provocative celebrations in occupied East Jerusalem and the outcome of President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with the French foreign minister in Rome.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida’s front page story read: “Thousands of Jews wreak havoc in Jerusalem in the commemoration of the ‘44th unification’.”

Al-Ayyam said, “Preparations underway for new settlement construction on the site of the torn down shepherds Hotel.

Al-Ayyam quoted French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe as saying that “peace talks must be resumed on the basis of the 1967 borders by September, or there will be consequences.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also quoted Abbas during his meeting with Juppe saying that “we are ready to resume negotiations if Israel accepts the 1967 borders.”

Al-Quds quoted Juppe in a sub headline saying “negotiations must be based on 1967 borders, recognizing Israel and its right to live in peace, and the refugees and Jerusalem issues will be discussed later.”

The three dailies featured the events in Syria and the death toll that reached 43 civilians, and President Bashar Al-Assad’s call for dialogue and release of political prisoners, while the opposition demands he leaves office.

Concerning the events in Yemen, al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam featured on their front pages stories about the battles in Sana and the dozens of people killed there. Al-Ayyam described the situation in Zanjabar as a humanitarian tragedy.

As the anniversary of the June 5, 1967 war gets near, which Palestinians refer to as Naksa Day, Al-Ayyam reported on the Israeli preparations saying Israeli forces prepare for possible protests on Syrian-Israeli borders on June 5.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida quoted an Israeli civil rights organization as saying that Palestinians living in East Jerusalem are constantly subjected to Israeli police brutality.

Both Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and Al-Ayyam reported on the internal Hamas differences between leaders in Gaza and Damascus.
