Arab League Calls for Imposing Air Embargo on Israeli Warplanes over Gaza

CAIRO, April 10, 2011(WAFA) –Arab League Council Sunday assigned the Arab Group to the United Nations to request the convening of an emergency special session of the Security Council in order to consider the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, and to impose an air embargo on Israeli warplanes to protect civilians.

The Council emphasized in a statement, after the Arab League Council emergency meeting at the level of permanent representatives today, the Arab’s stance that rejects the double-standard policy towards the Palestinian cause.

The Council called on United Nations, Security Council and Quartet to shoulder their responsibilities in order to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression and successive massacres and work on providing international protection for the unarmed Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

It also demanded the international community to prosecute all Israeli war criminals and bring them to justice.

The Council emphasized the need to lift the siege on Gaza Strip, open crossings to and from the Gaza strip, and activate the crossings agreement.

It welcomed President Mahmoud Abbas’s initiative to end the internal division and achieve Palestinian national reconciliation in order to achieve the higher interests of the Palestinian people, end the occupation, and establish the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders and with east Jerusalem as its capital next September.
