Prisoners Facing Deteriorating Conditions, says Club

RAMALLAH, March 31, 2011 (WAFA) – In a report published Thursday discussing the situation of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club (PPC) called for an international fact finding commission to look into the conditions of the prisoners.

It said that Israel had detained 220 Palestinians since the beginning of March, including 110 from the Hebron area and another 100 from the village of Awarta, near Nablus.

Israel has also extended the detention period of 225 prisoners and increased the sentence of one prisoner, Iyad Ibayyat, from 21 years to 3 life sentences. It also has renewed the solitary confinement of the prisoners Ahed Abu Ghalameh for another year.

The report also accused Israel of intensifying its torture methods against the prisoners, such as breaking their limbs, beating them with the ends of rifles, in addition to photographing them in order to humiliate them.

Concerning the prisoners’ health, the report said that Israel intentionally neglects to provide medical care for the prisoners. It said health of prisoners at Ramla prison hospital had deteriorated.

The PPC urged the international community to should its responsibility toward the lives of the Palestinian prisoners, stressing that there are over 1500 sick prisoners, 135 have been imprisoned for over 20 years and four have spent over 30 years so far.

It also included information about female Palestinian prisoners. It said one prisoner, Arina Sarahna, a Ukrainian citizen, who was arrested on May 22, 2002, has been allowed visitation rights only twice. Israeli authorities gave her permission to see her two daughters and mother, but not her husband’s parents during the same visit, which lasted only 45 minutes.

Arina’s husband, Ibrahim Sarahna, is also serving six life sentences plus 45 years, and is forbidden from visiting his wife.
