MSD Gives Prisoners Right to Palestinian Education

JERUSALEM, March 30, 2011 (WAFA) – The organization Al-Maqdese for Society Development (MSD) Wednesday succeeded in forcing the Israeli penitentiary administration to allow Palestinian prisoners from Jerusalem to study in Palestinian universities, particularly Al-Quds open university.

MSD explained in a statement that it had worked recently to pursue this issue with the Israeli penitentiary administration, which has prevented Palestinian prisoners from completing their education in Palestinian universities for decades, only allowing them to study through Israeli universities.
Israeli universities have Hebrew curricula and high tuition fees unaffordable by the prisoners, in addition to the complicated terms and policies of these universities towards Palestinian prisoners.

MSD had filed for this right on behalf of Palestinian prisoner Nasim al-Zaatari from Israeli Gilboa Prison. The right will be implemented in all prisons.

MSD stressed that this achievement is the beginning of a campaign to aid Palestinian prisoners and end the decades-long systematic abuse of their rights in Israeli prisons.
