LONDON, March 5, 2011 (WAFA) – Members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) in the United Kingdom have initiated a campaign to support an amendment to a bill regarding arrest and trial of officials accused of war crime known as the law of Universal Jurisdictions.
The campaign is to enable people to petition members of parliament to support Ann Clwyd's Amendment to the Police Bill currently going through parliament.
Her amendment calls for the government to omit the clause in the bill which tampers with the present law of Universal Jurisdiction. The clause is designed to enable Israeli politicians, who may be guilty of war crimes, to come and leave the UK without fear of arrest.
The PSC said that “it is ironic that the day after the Security Council (including the UK) has declared an arms embargo and asset freeze (against Libya) while referring Col (Muammar) Gaddafi to the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity,” a bill will be introduced to the parliament that would allow Israelis accused of war crimes to be free.
“The tampering will interpose a political layer between a High Court judge and the issuing of an arrest warrant, enabling perhaps Gaddafi to be arrested but an Israeli, with whom our political masters are friends, not to be arrested.” it said.
