Poll: Over 77% of Palestinians Reject Resumption Talks amidst Settlement Activities

 

NABLUS, February 28, 2011(WAFA)- A poll by the Center for Opinion Polls and Survey Studies in An-Najah University published Monday said that 77.6% of the respondents rejected resumption of talks with Israel as long as it continues building settlements. Only 19.6% supported talks.

 

In addition, 81% of respondents considered the US veto of an anti-settlement Security Council resolution as an American encouragement of the Israeli policies in the Palestinian Territory.

 

It said 80.1% supported recent Arab revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt and 22.8% expected similar revolutions to those of the Arab world in the West Bank and 28.8% expected that a similar revolution will happen in Gaza Strip.

 

The poll said that 55.6% believed in the possibility of reaching a national reconciliation agreement and 32.9% said that the reconciliation will speed up the peace process while 18.7% disagreed with them.

 

According to the results, 77.2% will participate in the coming elections, of which 37.4% will vote for Fatah and 11.7% for Hamas.

 

A total of 56.5% believed that the government of Salam Fayyad is more fit than a government under Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in managing the state internal affairs. However 19.2% supported a government of Haniyeh.

 

Creating job opportunities for the youth and fighting corruption gained top priority among respondents for what the new Palestinian government must adopt with 90.1% and 90.1% respectively.

 

The poll sample included 1360 Palestinian, 860 of which are from West Bank and 500 are from Gaza Strip.
