Clashes with Israeli Forces in Shufat, Silwan

JERUSALEM, February 23, 2011 (WAFA) – Clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians broke out Wednesday evening in Shufat refugee camp, north of Jerusalem, and in Silwan, south of the city, according to local sources.

Palestinians threw rocks and empty bottles at Israeli police manning a checkpoint just outside Shufat refugee camp. Police responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the stone throwers and at homes in the area causing people to suffer from gas inhalation.

The police closed the checkpoint and prevented cars from passing through it in either direction.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out in Silwan when residents set an army rooftop post on fire.

Police raided the neighborhood and clashed with residents firing rubber bullets and tear gas canisters at stone-throwing residents.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
