Fatah Discusses Elections, New Government

RAMALLAH, February 15, 2011 (WAFA) – Fatah Central Committee Tuesday discussed in a meeting chaired by President Mahmoud Abbas presidential and legislative elections as well as plans to form a new government in the next few weeks, according to a statement issued at the end of the meeting.

Fatah called on all political parties to put aside their differences and reservations and work together to hold elections, which is the will of the Palestinian people.

The PLO decided over the weekend to hold presidential and legislative elections at a date no later than September. Local elections have also been scheduled for July 9.

The Central Committee stressed the need to stop all forms of settlement construction as an essential condition for the resumption of negotiations, and called on the international community to support the legitimate aspiration of the Palestinian people by supporting the draft resolution submitted to the UN Security Council condemning Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.

Fatah said Egypt is a supporter and a partner of the Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
