Arab Summit Calls for a Viable Palestinian State


TUNISIA, May 24, 2004, (WAFA) - In the final statement of the16th Arab Summit, the Arab Leaders reiterated Sunday their utmost commitment to the Arab Peace Initiative ( launched in 2002) as a basis to achieve peace in the region, rebuffing the latest mutual promises between US President Bush and Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon.... They also confirmed that the Israeli military siege imposed on the Palestinian people and on their democratically elected President Arafat does not serve the peace process, mostly in the time the Palestinian Leadership voiced out its sound commitment to peace, especially the Road Map peace plan.... "The Arab Leaders condemn all the Israeli military operations waged against the Palestinian people and their Leadership in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) and operations indiscriminately target civilians", the final statement said.... The Arab Leaders called on the US President to abide by his vision of a viable Palestinian state along side with Israel as well as toeing the line of all related international resolutions, mostly peace-for-land principle, pointing out that the final status is to be negotiated with no prerequisite conditions.... They stated once more that the problem of the Palestinian refugees has to be solved in accordance with UN General Assembly resolution No. 194 in 1949.... Believing in the international role, the Arab Leaders called on the international community to immediately halt the Israeli crimes and massacres daily perpetrated against the defenseless Palestinian people.... In conclusion, the final statement called on the international community to exert all efforts to stop the Israeli colonial activities in the OPT....
