Amnesty: Israeli Destruction of Houses "War Crime, Discriminate, Unlawful"


LONDON, May 18, 2004, (WAFA) - Amnesty International said Monday that the Israel's destruction of Palestinian houses is based on "discriminatory policies and practices", calling on the Israeli government to halt its unjustified and unlawful destruction of the houses.... In a report issued Monday- Israel and the Occupied Territories. Under the rubble: House demolition and destruction of land and property -- Amnesty said: "The grounds invoked by Israel to justify the destruction are overly broad and based on discriminatory policies and practices.... Amnesty added that the Israeli "unjustified" destruction of thousands of Palestinian homes, as well as vast areas of agricultural land has reached an unprecedented level and must stop immediately.... It also called on Israel to "halt all unlawful destruction of homes and land, including for the expansion of Israeli settlements and/or for the building of the wall in the Occupied Territories...." Amnesty said in the report that the Israeli destruction of the houses "carried out as collective punishments" to facilitate the expansion of the "illegal Israeli settlements. Both practices contravene international law and some of theses acts are war crimes...." Israeli troops have destroyed more than 3000 Palestinian houses and made tens of thousand of children, men and women homeless, according to Amnesty....
