Newspapers review: Emergency Arab summit in Mecca focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Friday, May 31, 2019 (WAFA) – The emergency Arab summit in Mecca dominated the front page headlines in Friday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported that the final communiqué emphasized the priority of the Palestinian cause and the importance of the security of the Gulf countries and the Arab region.

Al-Ayyam said that Saudi Arabia’s King Salman stating that an Arab and international decisive stance was needed to confront Iran’s “threats” in the region.

It also reported him stressing the importance of the Arab Peace Initiative and United Nations’ resolutions as a basis to resolve the Palestinian issue.

King Salman was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating: “The kingdom is keen to preserve the stability and security of the region, to spare it the scourge of war and to realize peace and stability.”

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ participation in the summit.

Abbas was reported in al-Quds rejecting attempts to replace the land for peace principle with the land for prosperity.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam spotlighted White House advisor Jared Kushner and Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.

Al-Quds said that Kushner and Netanyahu discussed the fate of the US-touted Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, which is designed to force Palestinians into submission to perpetual Israeli dominance.

Kushner was also reported touting the US-Israeli relationship, saying it has never been stronger.

According to the dailies, Israeli occupation authorities have announced plans to build 805 new settler units in occupied Jerusalem.

Al-Quds reported Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar commending Abbas on his position on the so-called deal of the century.

It added that Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements have called on Palestinians to participate on the largest scale in the International Jerusalem Day.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli settlers stormed the Ramallah city neighborhood of al-Tireh and vandalized a Palestinian-owned fuel station in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Al-Quds said that Israeli forces injured several Palestinians and detained others in West Bank raids.

Al-Ayyam elaborated that nine Palestinians were injured by Israeli military gunfire as Israeli forces escorted settlers into Nablus’ Joseph Tomb.

It added that Israeli forces detained 11 Palestinians in multiple raids across the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli forces demolished several Palestinian residential and agricultural structures in the northern Jordan Valley.

They added that Palestinian businessmen in Hebron announced the creation of a holding company with a capital of $100 million.

Al-Quds reported member of Israeli parliament Ahmad Teibi predicting that Trump’s “peace plan” may disappear entirely as a result of the dissolution of the Knesset and Israeli elections in September.

Commenting on the new Israeli elections, scheduled on September 17, al-Ayyam said that Israel is experiencing a fierce electoral battle that might bring the end of Netanyahu’s era.

Premier Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida urging the US Congress to put pressure on Trump’s administration to reverse the sanctions imposed on the Palestinian people.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida said that the European Union has contributed €15 million to the payment of the May salaries and pensions.
