Newspapers review: PLO’s call for boycotting Manama’s workshop focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Monday, May 27, 2019 (WAFA) – The Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee’s call for boycotting the upcoming US-brokered ‘Peace to Prosperity’ economic workshop in Manama dominated the front page headlines in Monday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that the PLO’s Executive Committee calls on all countries invited to attend the workshop to “respect the position of the Palestinian consensus” and not participate in the workshop/ conference.

The committee was also reported in al-Ayyam stating that the goal pursued by the US for the workshop, scheduled on June 25-26 in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, is to start implementing the so-called deal of the century.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that the PLO reaffirms its resolute opposition to convening the Manama conference.

It said that the PLO views as grave the attempt to integrate Israel, economically, politically and security-wise into the region as it persists with its occupation and illegal annexation of Arab and Palestinian territories.

The conference constitutes the economic aspects of the US-touted Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, which is designed to force Palestinians into submission to perpetual Israeli dominance.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida expressing his belief that the workshop will be stillborn.

On the other hand, al-Quds opted to highlight the situation at Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the fourth week of Ramadan.

It said that scores of Jewish Israeli settlers forced their way into the mosque compound, causing rising tensions.

The dailies said that Israeli police surrounded al-Qibli Mosque inside the mosque compound and detained three Palestinian worshippers.

Al-Ayyam elaborated that the so-called ‘Temple Mount’ groups have officially declared their intention to storm the mosque compound on Ramadan 28th, which corresponds to June 2nd.

Additionally, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported the Palestinian government spokesperson Ibrahim Melhem announcing that the government will pay the public employees 60 percent of their salaries for May.

Al-Quds said that two Palestinians were injured from Israeli gunfire to the east of Khan Younes in the southern besieged Gaza Strip.

It added that Israeli forces conducted multiple raids across the West Bank, detaining 10 Palestinians.

It highlighted a DPA’s report indicating that the Israeli military announced that it has finished clearing land mines from the spot where Jesus Christ was baptized in Jericho.

Furthermore, al-Quds said that the Israeli government has extended the law banning family reunifications.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli occupation authorities have decided to restore the fishing zone off the cost of Gaza to 15 nautical miles.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, member of the PLO Executive Committee Ahmad Majdalani handed the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa a letter from his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas.

It added that Palestinian security forces arrested two drug dealers who held several Palestinians hostages and injured two others in al-Jalazoun refugee camp.

Regionally, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Quds reiterating that the ‘Palestinian-Israeli conflict’ is still the core issue in the Middle East.

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the solution to the conflict lies in ending the Israeli occupation and its repercussions.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Jordan calls on Israel to stop provocations at the mosque compound and holds it responsible for the safety of the mosque compound and its visitors.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the General Federation of Arab Journalists affirming their rejection of any scheme to liquidate the Palestinian cause, in reference to the upcoming US-brokered economic workshop in Manama.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, the private sector in Gaza and pro-Palestinian institutions in the US have refused to be economically lured into compromising on the Palestinian people’s political rights.
