Israel to demolish the family home of alleged Palestinian assailant

SALFIT, Tuesday, March 26, 2019 (WAFA) – Israeli forces delivered early today a demolition order to the family of a Palestinian alleged to have killed two Israelis in the northern West Bank village in al-Zawiya, west of Salfit.

WAFA correspondent reported that the Israeli military raided the village and handed the family of Omar Abu Laila an order notifying them of the intention to demolish their house as a punishment for its son’s alleged act.

The order allowed the family until March 31 to appeal the demolition order at Israeli courts.

However, in no other previous cases did an appeal prevent the demolition.

Abu Laila’s mother confirmed soldiers showed up at the family’s house at 2:30 AM, delivered the demolition order and tore posters of Abu Laila before withdrawing from the town.

Abu Laila, 19, allegedly killed two Israelis - a soldier and a settler - and seriously injured another outside the illegal Ariel settlement, built on land seized from Salfit and area villages last week.

On last Tuesday night, Abu Laila was killed by Israeli gunfire when dozens of soldiers surrounded the house in which he barricaded himself in Obwin village, north of Ramallah city.

Israel resorts to punitively demolish the family homes of Palestinians involved in attacks against Israelis, a policy that Israel does not apply to Israelis who were involved in fatal attacks against Palestinians.

The policy was widely condemned by human rights groups as “a collective punishment” and “a war crime and crime against humanity”.
