Newspaper review: death of Palestinian hunger striker in Israeli prison

RAMALLAH, September 26, 2016 (WAFA) – The death of a Palestinian hunger striking detainee in Israel’s Ramon prison as a result of a fatal stroke following Israeli Prison Service’s failure to provide necessary medical treatment hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported 40-year-old Yasser Hamduna died of a stroke in the Israeli prison of Ramon.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian President’s Office holding Israeli full responsibility for Hamduna’s death.

They quoted President’s Office as stating: “Peace will never be achieved unless all Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons are released.”

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added Palestinians in Israeli custody announced a three-day hunger strike in protest and mourning over Hamduna’s death.

The 40-year-old Hamduna, a resident of the Jenin town of Yaabad, was serving a 14-year prison sentence. He had been reportedly suffering from a number of health issues, including recurrent shortness of breath, heart problems, and agonizing ear pains.

His condition further deteriorated in the wake of Israeli prison authorities’ delay in providing treatment for him.

Highlighting Israeli detentions, al-Quds said Israeli police detained Palestinian worshippers from Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

It added police raided Jerusalem’s refugee camp of Shufat as well as Abu al-Nawar and Jabal al-Mukabbir neighborhoods.

The dailies said Jordanian journalist Nahed Hattar was shot dead outside Amman’s central courthouse.

Al-Quds reported Hattar’s family holding the Jordanian government responsible for lack of providing protection for Hattar.

Highlighting the last meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and his Egyptian counterpart Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi in New York, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri as stating Abbas and al-Sisi had an intimate dialogue.

He was also reported as stating his country didn’t seek to “impose prescriptions” on the Palestinian Authority (PA) and describing Abbas-al-Sisi relations as “well-established”.

The dailies reported Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump as pledging to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s “undivided capital” during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York.

Highlighting Israel’s plan to build underground wall around the besieged Gaza Strip, al-Ayyam said Israel was proceeding with laying the groundwork for the wall.

Al-Ayyam reported US Secretary of State John Kerry as slamming Israel’s settlement construction policies during a closed meeting with ministers representing countries proving aid to the PA.
