TOKYO, October 27, 2014 (WAFA) – The government of Japan
pledged $5.8 million as food aid to the United Nations Relief and Works
Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Friday announced Japan’s Deputy Chief
Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato.
In a meeting between Katsunobu and UNRWA
Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl, during his first visit to Japan, the Katsunobu
announced a new Japanese contribution of $5.8 million to help UNRWA distribute
essential food to 300,000 Palestine refugees in particularly dire need of
assistance.
Krähenbühl expressed his appreciation to the steadfast
Japanese financial and diplomatic support for UNRWA and briefed his Japanese
partners on the current situation in the battered Gaza Strip and the required
support to its residents.
He warmly welcomed the commitment to support Palestine
refugees expressed by most of the prominent Japanese parliamentarians and
senior government officials he met during his two-day official visit.
Krähenbühl answered at a public speaking event, when asked about skepticism regarding a solution to the plight of the Palestinian refugees: “This is no time to be skeptical. It is a luxury the world cannot afford. Instead, we must bring hope and act until a just and durable solution is found.”
