Hungarian PM says to halt country's withdrawal from the ICC

BUDAPEST, April 21, 2026 (WAFA) – Péter Magyar, leader of the Respect and Freedom Party (TISA), which won the Hungarian general elections, announced that he will halt his country's withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and that he will comply with the court's arrest warrants, in an apparent reference to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a press statement Monday evening from the Hungarian capital, Budapest, he explained that he and his team had reached an agreement to suspend the withdrawal process from the ICC until next June.

Magyaradded that his government intends to halt the withdrawal process and ensure Hungary remains a member of the court.

In response to a question about whether he had invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Hungary and whether Netanyahu would be arrested if he visited, Magyar clarified that he is prepared to meet with all heads of state without discrimination.

He continued, "If a country is a member of the ICC and a person wanted for justice enters the territory of that country, that person must be arrested."

Magyaradded: "But I think all heads of state and government are aware of this legal situation."

On April 13, Magyar declared victory in the Hungarian general election, defeating Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who had ruled the country for 16 years.
