Trump announces two-week Iran ceasefire

WASHINGTON, April 8, 2026 (WAFA) – US President Donald Trump announced early Wednesday morning his agreement to suspend the Israeli-American war on Iran for two weeks.

In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said: “Based on conversations I had with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Air Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, who asked me not to use destructive force tonight in Iran, and on the condition that Iran agrees to the full, immediate, and secure opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack on Iran for two weeks.”

He added: “This will be a ceasefire by both sides. We have also received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which we believe is a viable basis for negotiations.”

Trump indicated that “almost all previous points of contention between the US and Iran have been agreed upon.”

He said, "We have made significant progress toward reaching a final agreement on a long-term peace with Iran."

For his part, the Pakistani Prime Minister announced an agreement on an immediate ceasefire between Iran and the United States and their allies, encompassing "all fronts, including Lebanon and other areas." He confirmed that the truce went into effect "immediately" at 3:00 AM Iranian time and 8:00 PM US time.

Sharif welcomed what he described as a "wise step," inviting delegations from both sides to hold talks in Islamabad next Friday, with the aim of "reaching a final agreement that ends all disputes." He expressed his hope that these talks would lead to "lasting peace" in the region.

In contrast, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in a statement issued in English that Israel supports Trump's decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks, noting that this is conditional on "the immediate opening of the straits" and a halt to all Iranian attacks.

The statement added that the temporary two-week ceasefire "does not include Lebanon."

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that Tehran had expressed its readiness to halt its military operations if the American and Israeli attacks against it ceased, and that Tehran would agree to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks.
