Armenian Orthodox patriarch arrives in Bethlehem ahead of midnight mass

BETHLEHEM, January 18, 2026 (WAFA) – The Armenian Orthodox Patriarch Nourhan Manougian arrived in Bethlehem from Jerusalem on Sunday to lead the midnight mass for Christmas and Epiphany according to the Armenian Church calendar.

The patriarch’s procession received an official welcome at Manger Square, attended by Bethlehem Governor Mohammad Taher Abu Aliya, Tourism and Antiquities Minister Hani al-Hayek, Bethlehem Mayor Maher Qanawati, the general director of police in Bethlehem, Colonel Murad Qandah, the Bethlehem district commander, Colonel Mohammad Kayed Zaqzouq, along with clergy and local residents.

Following the formal reception, the procession continued to the Church of the Nativity and then to the Armenian Monastery, where Patriarch Manougian met with parishioners and performed a special prayer in preparation for the midnight mass.

The procession traveled from the patriarchate in Bab al-Khalil, Jerusalem, passing Mar Elias Monastery, the Catholic Action Roundabout, al-Najmeh Street, and Ras al-Aftis Street before arriving at Manger Square.

Mayor Qanawati said, “Although Bethlehem suffers under the Israeli occupation and its arbitrary practices, hope remains in our hearts even in these difficult conditions. Relief will come, and hardship will pass. Today we send a message to the world that Bethlehem still lacks freedom and peace as innocent Palestinians face violations and crimes by the occupation.”

Patriarch Manougian added, “Bethlehem is beautiful today, and we will pray for just peace.”
