RAMALLAH, January 15, 2026 (WAFA) – The Arab American University awarded President Mahmoud Abbas an honorary doctorate in humanities in recognition of his intellectual and research contributions, his distinguished national career, and his dedicated efforts in serving the Palestinian people and the Palestinian national cause.
The Arab American University held a ceremony at its campus in Ramallah today, Thursday, to award the President the honorary doctorate.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh, Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, several ministers, members of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Central Committee of the Fatah movement, a number of ambassadors accredited to the State of Palestine, and members of the University's Board of Trustees and Board of Directors.
In his address at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab American University, Yousef Asfour, stated, on behalf of the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees, and all the university's councils, and on behalf of everyone who contributed to the establishment of this institution, we have decided to award President Mahmoud Abbas an honorary doctorate in humanities. This is in recognition of his national and political career, his intellectual and research contributions, his pioneering role in serving the Palestinian people wherever they reside, his unwavering defense of their legitimate rights, his efforts to entrench the values of freedom, justice, and peace, his preservation of Palestinian history and narrative, and his enhancement of Palestine's standing globally.
Asfour added that the decision to award the President this degree stems from the "institutional conscience" of this university and is based on the firm conviction that honoring those who have given so much is a noble trait.
