NEW YORK, December 31, 2025 (WAFA) — Algeria’s term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council ends on Wednesday, with the Kingdom of Bahrain taking its place on Thursday for a two-year term.
With the start of the new year, the Security Council includes five permanent members: the United Kingdom, China, the United States, France, and the Russian Federation, alongside ten non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly.
The non-permanent members for 2026 are Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Latvia, Colombia, Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia.
In addition to Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia conclude their terms on the council today. According to established practice, Arab states alternate occupying the non-permanent seat between the African and Asian groups.
