Zahran Mamdani becomes first Muslim to win mayor of New York City

NEW YORK, November 5, 2025 (WAFA) – Democratic candidate Zahran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election, securing 50.4 percent of the vote according to preliminary results, thus becoming the first Muslim mayor of the city.

Voting concluded at 9:00 PM local time on Tuesday, and more than 89 percent of the ballots had been counted.

According to preliminary unofficial results, Mamdani, 34, received 50.4 percent of the vote, leading his closest competitor, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, by approximately 9 percentage points.

In the gubernatorial elections, Democratic candidate Mickey Sherrill won the governorship of New Jersey with 56 percent of the vote, defeating his Republican opponent, Jack Chatarelli, who was backed by President Donald Trump and received 43.4 percent.

Demonic candidate Abigail Spannberger also won the gubernatorial election in Virginia with 56.9 percent of the vote, while Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears received 42.9 percent.
