British minister says Israel's ban on UNRWA shouldn't come into effect

LONDON, January 8, 2025 (WAFA) – Israel's decision to ban the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) should not come into effectm, the British Foreign Office said.

This was stated by Anneliese Dodds, Minister of State for Development at the Foreign Office, on Tuesday evening, in response to questions related to Israel's decision to ban UNRWA's activities, during a session of the International Development Committee held in the British Parliament.

Dodds indicated that her government's view is that "this decision should not come into effect."

The British minister added that "UNRWA has a clear authority and its work is absolutely essential" to support Palestinian refugees.

"There is no doubt that there is no other organization that can provide aid and services as UNRWA does, not only in Gaza, but throughout the region," she added.

Dodds recalled that the activities carried out by UNRWA for decades are subject to the authority of the United Nations.

The British minister warned that the Israeli ban would cause great suffering to the Palestinians.
