WFP condemns Israeli attack on its convoy in Gaza

NEW YORK, January 6, 2025 (WAFA) - The World Food Programme (WFP) strongly condemned the horrifying attack on January 5, when a clearly marked WFP convoy was shot at by Israeli forces at a military checkpoint near Wadi Gaza, in the central the Strip.

In a press release, the WFP said that the attack endangered the lives of its staff and left the vehicles immobilized. At least 16 bullets struck the vehicles.

Despite having received all of the necessary clearances from Israeli authorities, the convoy, consisting of three vehicles carrying eight staff members, came under direct fire, according to the WFP.

"Thankfully, no staff members were injured in this terrifying encounter," the WFP said, adding that this unacceptable event is just the latest example of the complex and dangerous environment that WFP and other agencies are operating in today.

The WFP stressed the urgent need to improve the security situation in Gaza in order to continue life-saving humanitarian aid.

The WFP, a United Nations agency, urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilian lives and allow for the safe passage of humanitarian aid.
