Arab parliament welcomes UN general assembly's adoption of resolution affirming Palestinians’ right to self-determination

CAIRO, December 20, 2024 – The President of the Arab Parliament, Mohamed Al-Yemahi, welcomed the overwhelming adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution affirming the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.

The president of the Arab Parliament hailed the resolution, which received support from 172 countries, as an international confirmation of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, reflecting broad support for the Palestinian cause against the aggression of the occupation.

The President also expressed his support for two additional resolutions adopted by the General Assembly yesterday. One resolution called for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel's obligations concerning the presence and activities of the UN, other international organizations, and third states in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The other resolution affirmed the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources.

He called for the swift adoption of concrete and impactful measures to implement these resolutions, alongside those previously passed by the General Assembly, including those that support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and advocate for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Furthermore, he underscored the critical importance of the UN General Assembly's call to end the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months, in accordance with the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The President of the Arab Parliament underscored the imperative for these resolutions to be translated into tangible action in order to uphold international law and fortify the global order.

He emphasized that sustained international support for the Palestinian cause is essential for the realization of a just and lasting peace in the region.

He urged the international community, free nations and global organizations to intensify efforts toward ending the Israeli occupation and empowering the Palestinian people to fully exercise their inalienable rights.

He reaffirmed the Arab Parliament's unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian people until they are able to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
