ROME, November 21, 2024 (WAFA) - Italy would have to arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he came to the country, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto says, following the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court.
Crosetto told RAI television’s Porta a Porta program that he believed the ICC was “wrong: but said that if Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant “were to come to Italy, we would have to arrest them” under international law.
Earlier in the day, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant for committing heinous war crimes against innocent civilians, including children, in the Gaza Strip.
The ICC’s move theoretically limits the movement of Netanyahu, as any of the court’s 124 national members would be obliged to arrest him on their territory.
“The Chamber issued warrants of arrest for two individuals, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu and Mr Yoav Gallant, for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024, the day the Prosecution filed the applications for warrants of arrest,” the ICC said in a statement.
