RAMALLAH, November 21, 2024 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Thursday expressed appreciation for the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell for his stances in support of Palestine.
Speaking over video conference, President Abbas discussed with Borrell the latest developments on the Palestinian arena and the means to implement the UN resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
He thanked the EU and its member states for their political and financial support not only for the two-state solution but also for building Palestinian state institutions and enhancing Palestinian-European partnerships.
He also voiced his appreciation for Borrell’s stances, whereby Borrell called for reaching a ceasefire, allowing unhindered access of humanitarian and relief aid to all parts of the Strip, allowing the Palestinian Authority to assume its responsibilities in the Strip, and for full Israeli withdrawal from the Strip.
President Abbas also voiced his appreciation to Borrell for his stance in support of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), namely his concerns over the Israeli Knesset’s laws banning the agency from operating inside Israel and occupied Palestine, his endorsement of EU sanctions against “violent settlers’ enablers, including some Israeli government members” as well as of proposal to suspend EU-Israel political dialogue.
He commended Borrell for his bravery in defending right and justice as well as for his political stances that fall in line with international law.
President Abbas briefed Borrell on the Palestinian efforts to ensure a halt to the Israeli aggression, implement the UNSC Resolution 2735 and enable the State of Palestine to assume its responsibilities towards Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
He highlighted the importance of Europe’s support to Palestine’s bid for full membership of the United Nations, expand the wave of international recognitions of the State of Palestine and convene an international peace conference based on international law and relevant UN resolutions.
He also thanked Borrell for hosting the second meeting of the Global Coalition for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in the EU for the purpose of implementing the two-state solution based on relevant UN resolutions and international law in a manner conducive to ending the Israeli occupation and realizing the establishment of the State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
