President Abbas discusses developments with Russia's Putin on the sidelines of BRICS summit

KAZAN, October 24, 2024 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS summit held in Kazan, where the two leaders discussed the latest developments in Palestine and issues of mutual interest.

During the meeting, President Abbas briefed the Russian leader on ongoing efforts by the Palestinian leadership to halt the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

He emphasized the urgent need for international cooperation to stop the Israeli attacks and called for the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza, as well as the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid, particularly to northern Gaza, which has faced a severe blockade for over two weeks.

During their discussion, Abbas reaffirmed that Gaza is an integral part of the State of Palestine, which is under its responsibility and management. He rejected any actions that could lead to a separation of Gaza from the rest of Palestine.

The Palestinian leader also highlighted ongoing efforts, supported by a recently formed international coalition, to gain further recognition for the State of Palestine and to realize Palestinian statehood. He reiterated the commitment to pursue full membership in the United Nations.

Additionally, President Abbas addressed the challenging economic and financial situation in Palestine due to the continuous aggression and Israel's withholding of tax revenues, which has severely impacted the Palestinian economy and government functions.

He expressed appreciation for Russia's steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and its rights, underscoring the strong bonds of friendship between the two nations across various areas of mutual interest.

President Abbas had arrived in Kazan the previous evening at the invitation of President Putin to attend the BRICS summit and to pursue Palestine's membership in the BRICS group.
