RAMALLAH, Sunday, July 7, 2024 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaged in a phone conversation today, during which the President extended his congratulations to the new British Prime Minister on the victory of his Labour Party in the recent parliamentary elections.
During the call, President Abbas expressed his confidence that the formation of the new British government would contribute to enhancing the bonds of friendship and mutual cooperation between the two friendly nations and peoples. He conveyed his best wishes for the success and prosperity of Prime Minister Starmer's government in achieving progress and prosperity for the United Kingdom.
President Abbas also briefed Prime Minister Starmer on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, emphasizing the urgent need for international efforts to achieve a ceasefire, deliver humanitarian aid, withdraw Israeli occupation forces from all of Gaza, and release Palestinian tax funds held by Israel.
Furthermore, President Abbas affirmed his readiness to work with Prime Minister Starmer towards achieving peace through a two-state solution based on international legitimacy, stressing the importance of Britain recognizing the State of Palestine.
In response, Prime Minister Starmer reiterated his country's support for a ceasefire, providing humanitarian aid, and releasing hostages. He stressed the importance of releasing the Palestinian tax funds withheld by Israel.
He emphasized the importance of the Palestinian government's reform programs and expressed readiness to collaborate with them, noting that British Foreign Secretary David Lammy would soon visit Palestine to continue political discussions and enhance bilateral cooperation.
