Al-Maliki: Israel's offensive in Rafah aims to prolong the war

BRUSSELS, Tuesday, May 7, 2024 (WAFA) – Riyad al-Maliki, President Mahmoud Abbas's advisor on international relations, emphasized today Israel's lack of willingness to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing doubt regarding the Israeli government's commitment to achieving peace and stability in the region.

Speaking to a meeting of the Arab ambassadors in Belgium, al-Maliki clarified that the true aim behind Israel's incursion into the city of Rafah is to prolong the period of the war and expand its scope.

Al-Maliki commended the international efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and restoring calm to the region, underscoring the necessity of continued Arab and international support for Palestine and its people.

The discussion with the Arab ambassadors centered around the latest developments in the region following the Israeli occupation army's takeover of the Rafah border crossing, Gaza's only gateway to the outside world.

In concluding remarks, Al-Maliki stressed the importance of sustained international pressure on Israel to cease violations, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement of Palestinians, affirming that a two-state solution in accordance with international resolutions remains the sole path to achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.

Meanwhile, members of the Arab Ambassadors Council expressed their full solidarity with the Palestinian people, reiterating their steadfast support for their legitimate rights.

They emphasized the imperative of Arab and international unity in halting Israeli aggression and achieving lasting peace in the region.
