NEW YORK, Friday, March 22, 2024 (WAFA) - The United Nations Security Council is set to vote today on a US-drafted resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire the Gaza Strip.
According to Anadolu Agency, the US resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, protecting civilians from all parties, allowing the delivery of essential humanitarian aid, alleviating humanitarian suffering, and reaching an agreement on prisoners.
The resolution, which the United States has been negotiating for some time, emphasizes that Gaza is part of the territories occupied in 1967 and expresses support for a two-state solution.
Supporting ongoing international diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire, the resolution calls on all parties to abide by international law, protect civilians, preserve civilian infrastructure, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The resolution opposes the forced displacement of civilians in Gaza, stating that it violates international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
In addition to the US resolution, the ten elected members of the Security Council are also preparing a resolution on the situation in Gaza.
Dubbed the "E-10" resolution, it calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan.
France, which has held closed sessions of the Security Council over the past two weeks on Gaza, is also preparing a resolution expected to focus on a permanent ceasefire later.
The resolution requires approval by at least nine votes and no veto from any of the five permanent member states - the United States, France, Britain, Russia, and China.
Since the start of the aggression on Gaza last October 7th, Washington has used its veto power against three draft resolutions, two of which called for an immediate ceasefire.
The death toll in the Gaza Strip since October 7th has risen to around 32,000 martyrs, with 74,188 injured, the majority of whom are women and children, in addition to thousands of victims still under the rubble.
