Half of Palestinian prisoners at Ofer Prison are infected with COVID, says group

RAMALLAH, Thursday, February 03, 2022 (WAFA) – At least half of the Palestinian political prisoners at the Israeli prison of Ofer, to the west of Ramallah, are currently active patients of COVID, today said the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS).

“The Israel Prison Service (IPS) has turned the pandemic into a tool of repression by imposing extraordinary measures and depriving the prisoners of their rights under the pretext of the spread of the pandemic,” said PPS in a press statement.

PPS pointed out that as a result of the IPS’ failure to provide accurate information about the situation of the Palestinian prisoners and detainees, human rights groups have so far been unable to count the exact number of COVID patients in the Israeli prisons since the early stages of the disease.

Nearly 1,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees are currently held in the Israeli prison of Ofer.
