RAMALLAH, July 3, 2013 (WAFA) – The fast moving developments in Egypt and the army’s ultimatum on the government continued to dominate the front page headlines of Wednesday’s Palestinian newspapers.
The headlines in al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam highlighted attempts by President Mohammad Morsi to maneuver around the army’s ultimatum, which ends on Wednesday.
Al-Quds said in the headline that “Today, the future of the Brotherhood rule will be decided.”
The papers printed several stories on this subject with pictures showing the masses of Egyptians protesting in the main cities demanding an end to Morsi’s rule only a year after taking office.
The Israeli army killing of a teenager in the town of Dura, near Hebron, was highlighted on the front page of the three dailies, which also highlighted statements President Mahmoud Abbas made during a press conference with his Italian guest and in which he said that US Secretary of State John Kerry made helpful proposals but they still need more clarifications.
Al-Ayyam said Abbas starts Wednesday an official visit to Lebanon to discuss the situation in the refugee camps. It said Abbas “will stress the neutrality of the refugee camps in the conflict.”
It said in a different story that according to Hamas, the Islamic Jihad official who was shot dead by Hamas police in Gaza last month and which caused tension between the two Islamist groups was killed by a stray bullet.
Al-Quds said in a follow up story on the shooting at the car of Fatah leader in Balata refugee camp in Nablus, Husam Khader, that he welcomed a call by Abbas on the security forces to arrest the shooters.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Israeli army re-arrested Hamas lawmaker Muhammad Abu Tir from his Ramallah area home. Abu Tir is from Jerusalem but he was expelled from the city after several months in detention and forced to live behind the segregation wall that surrounds the city and separates it from its Palestinian environs.
