Groups Call for Global One-Day Hunger Strike Supporting Palestinian Prisoners

TEL AVIV, May 14, 2012 (WAFA) – An appeal by the Popular Struggle Coordinating Committee, Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), and the Israeli peace bloc Gush Shalom called for a global 24-hour hunger strike in solidarity with striking Palestinian prisoners on Thursday, said a press release on Monday.

The strike is expected to be carried out in front of Israeli embassies, consulates and UN offices around the world on Thursday, which marks one month since over 2000 Palestinian prisoners started an open-ended hunger strike on April 17, added the press release.

It said “As Israel refuses to accept the prisoners' demands for their basic rights, including humane treatment, many of them face immediate risk of death as the world watches over in silence.”

Palestinian prisoners started the hunger strike demanding better living conditions and medical care in Israeli jails, as well as demanding to end the Israeli policy of administrative detention without trial.

The appeal also called to endorse the Palestinian civil society call to boycott G4S, a British-Danish security company whose Israeli subsidiary provides security systems for major Israeli prisons, due to the company’s “complicity in Israel’s violations of Palestinian prisoners’ rights.”
