Newspapers Review: Abbas’ Meetings with Foreign Officials, Situation in Syria

RAMALLAH, January 29, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Sunday focused on President Mahmoud Abbas’ meetings with Irish and Japanese officials, as well as the suspension of the Arab League observer mission in Syria.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on its front page that Abbas briefed visiting Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Eamon Gilmore, and Japanese Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ryuji Yamane, on the latest development in the Middle East peace process.

The prime headline quoted Abbas saying the Israeli intransigence and its refusal to present clear proposals on the issues of borders and security as requested by the Quartet created a setback to the peace talks.

The newspaper printed a picture of Abbas and Gilmore during their meeting in Ramallah on Sunday.

Al-Ayyam’s prime front page story reported that the General-Secretary of the Arab League, Nabil el-Araby, suspended its monitoring operation in Syria due to the escalation in violence, but the Arab observers will remain in the country in hope that the mission could be resumed.

The daily printed picture of members of the Free Syria Army; one of them holding a bazooka in Damascus.

Al-Quds featured a meeting of the Palestinian leadership on Monday to assess the results of the recent exploratory meetings between Palestinians and Israelis under the Quartet supervision, before reviewing them with the Arab peace initiative in February 4.

An op-ed in al-Ayyam newspaper explored the Palestinian options after the failure of the exploratory meetings. The daily anticipated that the Palestinian leadership will reassess its position and work to achieve a unified vision to face the Israeli plans.
