Newspapers Review: Dailies Focus on Exploratory Talks, Syria

RAMALLAH, January 28, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Saturday focused on diplomatic statements on the Palestinian-Israeli exploratory meetings and the situation in Syria.

Al-Ayyam quoted a Palestinian official holding Israel responsible for the failure of the exploratory meetings due to its refusal to discuss the issue of Jerusalem and its insistence to continue its occupation of the Jordan valley.

The newspaper also reported that the Quartet will propose steps to encourage the Palestinian leadership to extend the exploratory meetings for another two months.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida featured the killing of 102 Syrians at the hand of the security forces, printing a picture of opposition protesters and a fighter of the Free Syria Army in the city of Saqba after taking it over.

The three dailies focused on Israeli army assaults on the weekly non-violent marches against settlements and the Apartheid Wall, reporting on dozens of injuries, including two reporters.

Al-Quds was the only one to highlight an Israeli plan to build a settlement outpost in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina, with settlers taking over Palestinian residences as was done in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of the occupied city.

Al-Quds editorial called on Hamas and Fatah to speed up implementation of the reconciliation agreement and to hold elections to settle the situation internally before taking steps on the international level to end the Israeli occupation.
