India Celebrates Republic Day in Ramallah

RAMALLAH, January 26, 2012 (WAFA) – The Indian Representative Office to the Palestinian Authority Thursday celebrated the 62nd anniversary of India’s Republic Day in a reception held in Ramallah and attended by Palestinian officials and other guests.

Speaking at the occasion, India’s Representative Bishwadip Dey said that his country was the first non-Arab state to recognize Palestine in 1988.

“India remains convinced that Palestine meets all criteria for UN membership as set out in the UN Charter and deserves to become a full-fledged member of UN,” he said.

He expressed hope that the UN Security Council will support Palestine’s application for full membership of the UN “sooner than later.”

Dey said India “has been raising her concern against the continuing settlement construction and the siege of Gaza.”

He said that he believes “the time is not far when Palestinians will realize their dream and have an independent state of their own on the 1967 territory,” wishing “to have the opportunity to celebrate with them their independence and statehood.”
Representing President Mahmoud Abbas at the reception, Hussein al-Araj thanked India for its support of the Palestinian people and for their struggle for independence.
