RAMALLAH, January 26, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Thursday highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ statements on the Amman talks with Israel reiterating that negotiations will resume only if Israel agrees to recognize the borders of the Palestinian state.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida’s front page story quoted Mahmoud Abbas saying that “the Israeli government still refuses to recognize the Palestinian state borders.”
It stated that Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh affirmed that there will be no meetings between Palestinian and Israeli representatives in Amman next week in order to evaluate the results of the past meetings.
Al-Ayyam highlighted the end of the Quartet’s three months deadline, which were set to achieve progress in the peace process but ended without progress.
Al-Quds reported on the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s call to end blockade on Gaza and continue with the meetings in Jordan. She said this during a press conference in Gaza when she signed a 55 million euros agreement to support UNRWA and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The three dailies reported on a call by Fatah Central Committee member Marwan Barghouti on the Palestinian people to continue popular struggle against the Israeli occupation.
The three dailies printed photos of Barghouti when he appeared at the Israeli magistrate court in Jerusalem.
Al-Quds editorial wondered about what would be the Quartet’s position now after the end of the three months deadline for the Palestinian-Israeli exploratory talks without any progress due to Israeli intransigence.
